ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
For more than 30 years, Frances Paley has been exploring various media. Her work has evolved from early investigations in sculpture using machine technology to large-format black and white photography and on to airbrushed watercolor and pen and ink drawings in the 1980s. Over the past decade, Paley has been involved in fine art prints utilizing photographic imagery and computer enhancement. The images are as taken through the camera lens, no layering is used. They are not a montage. Each image represents a particular moment in time and the sole change is through color. The images embody the romantic, mysterious and surreal. They present the world from a slightly askew stance and are meant to be ambiguous and mildly disorienting. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including exhibitions in Peru, Italy and France. Her work is in various museum, corporate and private collections. Frances Paley has a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University, a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Master of Arts degree in Psychotherapy from Goddard College. She held a faculty position and administrative post at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Artist Statement

The images are exactly as taken, meaning there is no layering, moving of objects, reworking of vignettes, etc. They are not a montage. For me this is important as it represents the truth of that image at the time it was made.

I put the image on the computer and the only work I do is color. I take the color out of the image and basically repaint it. I do this with a series of inversions, meaning I work it in the positive image, change it to a negative, work more, move it back to a positive, etc. Finally I decide which one I want to keep.

I only photograph inanimate things. I do not see the inanimate as "lifeless". To me they have life and by painting them they seem to exhibit energy and dynamism. They have the ability to reflect feelings, attitudes and can elicit emotion. They embody the poignancy of memory, longing, love and loss. They mirror our vulnerability and humanity by allowing us to peek into our wistful desires to capture the ephemeral and transcend time. The range of the work deals with beauty and mystery existing in a surreal reality.
