Self-taught folk painter William Hawkins made this painting in 1975 entirely out of found materials. He used enamel paint intended for industrial purposes and discarded masonite for this serene painting of two cowboys and a packhorse travelling through a snowy mountainous landscape. Hawkins' forms are sharply outlined and flattened, mimicking paper cutouts against a stage. As is typical of the artist, Hawkins also includes his birthdate, the year the work was completed, his own name, and additional wording, all in capital letters
